"AMERICANS HAVE A LONG TRADITION of conservation and stewardship of our Nation's lands and other natural resources. Over the last three decades, we have made remarkable progress, working together to meet our conservation goals and improve the quality of our air and water. Local involvement is critical to ensuring successful, effective, and long-lasting conservation results." - President George W. Bush August 26, 2004

This site provides a sense of the diverse and critical NOAA programs that contribute to NOAA's legacy of cooperative conservation. Cooperative conservation draws on the resources of federal, state and local partnerships to improve environmental protection and natural resource management, and to achieve the goals of shared governance and citizen stewardship.

In August of 2004, President Bush signed an executive order directing the federal agencies involved in environmental policy to actively promote cooperative conservation. On August 29-31, 2005, invited representatives from the public and private sectors will meet in St. Louis, Missouri to share experiences and expertise, and to advance the cooperative conservation vision. Cases studies presented on this site will be highlighted in breakout sessions at the conference. For more information on the conference, please visit the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
